With the monsoon expected to hit Rajasthan in early July, schools across Jhunjhunu district are gearing up with a special initiative — Rain Safety Week, starting June 29. Over 50 government and private schools will conduct awareness drives, safety drills, and hygiene campaigns for students.
The Education Department has encouraged schools to teach children how to stay safe during waterlogging, use proper footwear, and be alert near electrical poles during heavy rains. Activities include poster-making competitions, quizzes, rain safety pledge ceremonies, and role-play drills on what to do during emergencies.
“Children are among the most vulnerable during sudden rainfalls. This program ensures they’re not only prepared but also act as messengers of safety at home,” said Meena Kumari, a principal from Chirawa.
This move comes as some areas in Jhunjhunu — like Mandawa and parts of Pilani — have experienced waterlogging and power outages during early monsoons in previous years. Teachers also plan to discuss the importance of clean drinking water and avoiding stagnant puddles to prevent diseases like dengue.
